Liv’s Bike Fit and Size Guide

Take the first step to finding your dream bike. It doesn’t matter if you are competing at the highest level or commuting to work, superior fit is all-important and choosing the right bike size is the first step to getting your perfect ride.

    Bike Sizing Charts

Sizing should be used as a reference only.

Athlete Testimonials: What Bike Size do the Pros Ride?

Our athletes ride Liv bikes in competition, during training, and for fun. It’s their feedback after rounds of prototypes and testing that inspires the final fit adjustments to make the best bikes for female bodies. While putting Liv bikes through the paces, our athletes have the opportunity to dial in their fit and make sure they are on the right size bike. Because, when it comes down to it, it's not just your height that plays a role in what size bike you will choose. Every rider has her own unique anatomy, riding style, and personal preferences. So, we've asked Liv athletes and ambassadors to share their information to help you make a more informed decision when choosing the bike size you will ride.

Still, nothing compares to jumping on a bike and taking it for a test ride before your purchase. That's why we recommend visiting your local Pedal Revolution shop or trying a bike at a Liv bike demo event near you.  After any bike purchase, a professional fit is always highly recommended.

    3F Bike Design for Women

3F stands for “Fit, Form, Function.” Liv use 3F as the compass of wisdom that guides our team as Liv research, test, and think up brand new bike designs, apparel and gear.

Starting from scratch, Liv design Liv bikes for women so they never have to compromise their ride. Liv dig deep into data that reveals the varying proportions, dynamics and strengths of women’s bodies, because the average woman is not the same as the average human body.

Liv calculates a bike’s fit by using three layers of data: Body Dimensions, Muscular Activity, and Strength Patterns. Liv fine-tune our performance products with feedback from athletes. For our off-road performance line, our shocks are tuned for women by women. Together, the data and feedback are applied to design the final frame and entire bike build to complement a women’s body and harness her fierce loLivr body strength with balance and comfort. This is our serious pursuit for fit, and with our 3F Design Philosophy lighting the way, you just don’t have to settle for something that merely works. You’ll be stoked on something that finally fits and delivers the ride.

It’s not just about creating good-looking bikes. At Liv, Liv invent bikes you’ll fall in love with. Bikes that get you excited to ride and are impossible to ignore. Each year, Liv develops a color palette that carries through all our bikes, gear and clothing. Our designers spend countless hours finding unique ways to apply current trends to new and exciting themes, colors and graphics. With an obsessive attention to detail, Liv make sure every sleek line, small spacer, or cable end fits our overall vision to inspire you to ride.

This is where Liv ties the whole thing in a bow. The package is only complete after the union of frame design, componentry, and state-of-the-art technologies. That’s how Liv produce lighter, faster, better performing bikes for every type of rider. From our pressure-reducing, women’s-specific saddles, to stem lengths optimized to put you in the perfect position, to brake levers that put stopping power within better reach – Liv carefully selects each component to get you as close as possible to the perfect ride, right out of the box.

    The data behind 3F

More than 15 reputable sources, ranging from research studies to the Global Body Dimension Database, inform thousands of data points about women’sanatomy, sizing variations, muscle energy, and outputs. These data points are reviewed and analyzed by Liv Design leaders to create three layers of data: Body Dimensions, Muscular Activity, and Strength Patterns.

Liv use a collection of body dimensions data, including average anthropometric measurements for both men and women, as Liv set a woman’s fit on the bike. The optimal fit Liv create brings a woman’s body into a comfortable seated position with ideal placement of contact points, and situates her body to deliver maximum power output.

Figure 1. These are the average anthropometrical differences between men and women of the same height. Liv uses this data for setting body position and contact points like narrower handlebars, smaller grips, women’s-specific saddle design, and crank length.

    1. Stature
    2. Crotch Height
    3. Sitting Height
    4. Shoulder Breadth
    5. Shoulder to Grip
    6. Hand Length
    7. Hand Breadth
    8. Hip Breadth, sitting
    9. IschiumDistance
    10. Foot Length
    11. Foot Breadth

Figure 2.  Looking at the average body measurements of men and women of 5’7” and of 5’3”, Liv see significant anthropometrical differences that will determine the best bike fit. Notice that differences in proportions become more pronounced for shorter men and women.

Figure 3. When Liv put the average woman onto her closest sized men’s frame, Liv see that she becomes too bent over and stretched out. Not only can this negatively impact her power output, pedal efficiency and balance for bike control, but it also can result in pain points such as lower back pain, neck pain, elbow pain, and numbing of the hands. Riding in the wrong position may lead to injury down the road…or trail.

Figure 4. Height Distribution applies to how Liv decide our frame sizing range; Liv recognize that there is a range of body shapes and sizes that overlap. Liv is committed to proper bike fit for the majority of women, short and tall, by designing women’s-specific geometries and componentry.

Figure 5. Liv bicycle designs emphasize women’s fierce lower body strength, taking into account her natural muscle firing pattern. Here we see the data found that women activate the rectus femoris (front thigh) muscles more so than men while cycling.

    1. Rectus Femoris
    2. Vastus Lateralis
    3. Vastus Intermedius
    4. Vastus Medialis

Figure 6. Here Liv compare the proportions of how average men and women recruit strength from their lower body and upper body. Notice that a woman’s percentage of lower body to upper body strength is greater than that of a man’s. Liv use this data on strength differences to tailor the stiffness and compliance of our frames to meet a woman’s power demands, without sacrificing the strength and durability of the frame. This delivers a unique carbon layup in each of our composite frames for a tough, yet feather-light bike and a super comfortable ride.

    1. Total Body Strength
    2. Upper Extremities Strength
    3. Lower Extremities Strength
    4. Trunk Strength
    5. Dynamic Strength
