WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN

R5 has one job—get to the top, fast. But for all the glory and fanfare that comes with a summit finish, they’re rarely the only climb of the day. And while a race isn’t usually won on a descent, they can certainly be lost. A climbing bike that can’t carve a hairpin is a bit like a cup of decaf coffee. This is the fourth iteration of the R5, and while weight and stiffness have varied over the years, the handling, poise, and unmatched prowess on a descent have been consistent since day one.

The new R5 frame is 130g lighter than the previous model—a 16% reduction from an already-light frame. The new frame is 703g, and the new fork is 329g, bringing the frames to just a hair over the kilogram mark. We also pulled some weight out of the parts that are included with the bike—the handlebar and stem are each 12g lighter, and the seat post’s 20g lighter. You won’t have any trouble building a bike that meets the 6.8kg UCI minimum. And while aerodynamics weren’t a focus with this frame the way they would be on an S5 or P5, bringing the cables inside reduced drag by 25g, too. It’s faster in every direction.

And you can put a 34mm tire in it!

The R5 s all about aerodynamics - check our "Technical Specificaton" below to learn more!

How do I work out what size bike I need?

To get a approximate size you only need to know your height and inside leg measurement.

All sizing information is a guide only. If you have any questions about bike sizing, our expert team is here to help. Call us on 01603 614400 (Norwich) or 01493 656800 (Gorleston-On-Sea), or email us

If you are looking to get a precision fit we offer some of the best precision fitting services available, for more information please click here.

Your height should be measured from the floor to the top of your head without your shoes on (to measure yourself stand against a wall with a ruler and mark at the top of your head then measure from the floor to the mark).

Your inside leg measurement should be taken from your crotch to the floor without your shoes on (to measure yourself stand against a wall with a ruler, place the ruler between your legs and mark the wall in-between your legs then measure from the floor to the mark).

F.A.Q

I’m between sizes – what size is right for me?

If you are sat between the two sizes then you can choose either of the sizes depending on your preference. as a general rule, a Road Bike is easy to size up by raising the saddle and fitting a longer stem however if the frame is too big for you making it smaller is very difficult if not impossible (a large frame is also less efficient) . A Mountain Bike as a general rule will be easier to handle if you choose the larger frame, they offer a more planted feel but will not be as technical through trails where you want to pick your line.

If you are in any doubt about your size please contact us and our team will be very happy to help you.

Are women’s sizes different to men’s?

Yes. Women’s geometry is different, they typically have shorter top tubes to reduce the reach to the handlebars so a women’s small would be smaller than a men’s small. With that said, the sizing is calculated the same way so a 54cm will have the same frame size regardless of gender.

How do you measure a bike to find the frame size?

Mountain bikes typically use the length of the seat tube from the top of the tube to the centre of the bottom bracket (middle of that front chainring). Some road bike are also measured this way but some measure the top tube from the center of the headtube in a horizontal line parallel with the floor to where the seat tube would be if it continued up (this is known as “virtual sizing”)

AERODYNAMICS

Aerodynamics is at the very core of what Cervélo do. The company was founded with the goal of making cyclists faster, and using aerodynamics is the best way to achieve that goal. They take a system approach to aerodynamics, considering the bike, rider, and all components together. A bike never rides itself, and so Cervelo don’t design or test their bikes without a rider. It means that their bikes are not just fast in the wind tunnel, but fast out on the road with you as well.

Aerodynamic drag is the major factor affecting a bike and rider - it can account for up to 90% of the overall resistance that a rider must overcome. There are several types of drag relevant for us. First, pressure drag. As a body (in this case a bike and rider) passes through the air, it forces the air molecules to move out of the way in order to pass through them. These molecules push back on the body, creating pressure. The component of this pressure that faces aft (to the rear of the body) is called pressure drag.

Secondly, there is friction drag. Air, like all fluids, has viscosity (or "thickness"). The air molecules that come into contact with the body stick to its surface and stay stationary in relation to the body. As the body continues through the air, other air molecules pass by the stuck molecules as they flow around the body in layers, following parallel paths. This is the laminar boundary layer. The viscous nature of air creates a shear force, or friction drag.

At some point on nearly all bodies, laminar flow cannot be maintained and the air molecules tumble and mix instead of flowing smoothly. The transition point is where this turbulent boundary layer begins. This behaviour of flow is related to a parameter called the Reynolds number, which is determined by several physical characteristics of the flow. The laminar flow regime exists up to Reynolds numbers of around 10,000. Beyond Reynolds numbers of 10,000, the flow transitions to “turbulent” flow, as shown in the figure below.

graph

Due to its mass, moving air has inertia and therefore cannot easily follow high-curvature surfaces. Under these conditions air separates from the body, creating low-pressure regions that "pull" on the surface, contributing to more drag. If the trailing edge of the body fails to guide the air neatly back together again, there is a “stalled flow” — a region of recirculating air that has low pressure. This low pressure again pulls on the surface, adding still more drag.

Indesigning our bikesand components to minimize aerodynamic drag, there are two different parameters we can affect. The first is the drag coefficient, which is a factor based on the shape of a body and how the air flows around it. Different shapes have different effects on drag. For example, a circular shape has roughly 24 times the drag of our TrueAeroTM tube shape. The orientation of the tube shapes to the airflow also affects its drag: the seat post and down tubes, for example, are presented at an angle, meaning the air hits a shape that’s closer to an ellipse, changing the drag coefficient.

The other parameter we can control is the frontal area. This is intuitive: the larger the area, the bigger the drag. Cervelo engineers take this into account: for example, their time trial, triathlon and aero road bikes are designed so that the rider and bike (as an integrated system) present the smallest frontal area possible, for maximum aerodynamic advantage.

The drag coefficient, CD, and the frontal area, A, are related to the total drag a body sees by the following equation:

graph

The other parameters in this equation are the velocity of the body through the air, V, and the density of the air, ρ (Rho). This is also the reason that many bicycle speed records attempts are made at high altitude, since the lower air density has a direct reduction on drag.

These aerodynamic forces are the largest source of drag on a bike and rider, up to 90% of the total resistance that they see. This means that designing Cervelo bikes and components to minimize drag, by minimizing both CD and A, is an efficient means of making the rider faster. However, minimizing the drag on the rider, through body position, component design or other means, is also important and so a systems approach is needed to ensure the fastest overall result. A bike never rides itself, and so Cervelo don’t design or test their bikes without a rider for this reason.
