Spinning Shoes

Using the right shoe can transform your spinning class. By swapping to dedicated cycling spinning shoes you get a more efficient, safer and more comfortable ride. The stiff sole of a cycling shoe ensures efficient power transfer to the pedal and gives you a better connection to the bike. Having greater power and being safer on the bike are two of the main advantages to utilizing a proper spinning shoe. Another great advantage is that a cycling shoe is made for activity so they are light, breathable and conform to your foot shape giving you a much more comfortable experience.

Most spin bike pedals have a toe strap on one side and a cleat or "clipless pedal" on the other. Before buying your shoes it is recommended to determine the type of cleat you will need to work with the pedal (if you are planning on using just the toe clips then this does not apply).

Cleats (Essential for clipped spinning)

If you want to attach your new cycling shoes to the pedals, you will need some cleats, cleats are typically supplied with pedals so you will need to purchase the correct cleat to match up to the pedals at you spin centre (this obviously also need to match your shoe).

Essentially there are two types of pedal cleats that are predominantly used with spinning bikes these are the SPD type or the road 3 bolt style (pictured below). Check with your local facility to see what pedal system is on their indoor cycling bikes.

Cycling shoe types

When talking about cleated systems there are essentially 3 types of shoes:

MTB Shoes - Mountain Bike Shoes/ MTB shoes are durable for indoor and outdoor riding and typically have some tread on the sole to help give you grip in the mud, these typically use the SPD 2 bold style fitting. The 2- hole design of the SPD cleat connects directly with the sole of the shoes and allow you to point the foot in the proper direction

Road Shoes - Road shoes are obviously specifically designed for road use, they feature a stiff sole with almost no flex to help keep your foot in the correct position and ensure optimal power transfer. Road shoes typically use the 3 bolt design cleats to offer the most stability and a wide range of adjust-ability for foot placement and alignment.

Multisport shoes - Multisport shoes are somewhere in the middle, they offer supreme comfort and are ideal for the leisure cyclist. Typically they are modified shoes that can attach both styles of cleat. With that said a large portion of multisport shoes are modified road shoes, these are a great option for those who might prefer the road shoe feel but need the two bolt SPD style cleat.

Crush your next spin class or cycle workout with indoor cycling shoes designed for the best in comfort and power output!
