  • Park Tool BBT22C - bottom bracket tool - 20-tooth splines: Shimano and ISIS review by Justin, on 15/11/2014

Excellent quality and performance (as you would expect from Park Tool) and  an excellent price on Park Tool ( as you would expect from Fat Birds)! The Park Tool BBT22C is the workshop version of BBT22 which provides the addition of multiple interfaces namely; 32mm, 1" and 3/8" connection(s). However consequently this tool is longer than the compact BBT22 version and this means that you will NOT be able to use the existing crank bolts on your BB to secure the tool in place as with the compact BBT22 version (which is recommended to avoid shredding the splines if it slips)! As such you will need to purchase a custom bolt to successfully secure the tool in place (recommended) which for a standard square tapered BB is an M8 (i.e. Metric 8mm) bolt with a fine 1.00mm thread pitch. NOTE: Standard non custom M8 bolts are usually 1.25mm pitch so be careful to check or you will damage you BB! My own preference for this is to use a high tensile M8 fine 1.00mm pitch x 45mm bolt which typically features an 8mm hex head that measures approximately 13mm across and 8mm deep. This is ideal as there is 30mm clearance from the end of BBT22C to the BB bolt hole which is approximately 20mm deep and thus; this will provide around 15mm of positive engagement when in place. Naturally you will have to verify this with your own bike as square taper length/BBs differ. Additionally a suitable washer is REQUIRED namely an M8 24mm x 1.50/2mm as this will be provide exactly 1mm clearance from the edge of the BBT22C and distribute the tension along its full surface. The result is that when in place you can use a standard 1/2" drive 1" socket on the BBT22C which will clear the washer and bolt head that will fit snuggly inside the square 1/2" drive hole and provide safe, secure positive engagement with BBT22C. Ideally use a torque wrench set to the BB manufacturers recommendations, but  a longish wrench will also do (i.e. 1/2" drive 250mm T-bar or 1/2" drive 300mm wrench etc). Refer to Park Tool article(s) on BB maintenance for advice regarding procedures, continental threading and standard torque settings etc. This tool should last you a lifetime - highly recommended.
